Background on Prison Rape Film Project

The prison rape documentary project has expanded considerably in scope and size since its inception in late 1999. The director, Gabriel London, completed a no-budget short documentary on prison rape in Spring 2000, as a senior film project at Pomona College. Subsequently, the film gained a foundation grant and London forged an alliance with Human Rights Watch to provide film footage to compliment its then forthcoming April 2001 study on prison rape. Seeking to bring on added expertise and experience with filmmaking, London proposed the project as a full length documentary to acclaimed filmmaker, Jonathan Stack of Gabriel Films in the Fall 2000.

In the subsequent months, the story took on an increasingly urgent character as research revealed more and more alarming stories of prison rape and the indifference of authorities. Production began in February 2001, with filming in Louisiana, Texas, and Northern California. In mid-April editing was completed on two 6-minute film segments, The Rodney Hulin Story and The Rules of the Game: Prison Rape and Reform.

The Rodney Hulin Story: Explicit Materials Warning

The following pages contain graphic and explicit materials concerning the case of Rodney Hulin, a young inmate who committed suicide in 1996. They are laid out in such a way to allow the web viewer to reconstruct his case interactively.  Included are Texas State Department of Corrections official documents that offer proof that officials new Hulin was being subjected to rape,  forms that document his repeated official requests for protective custody, and finally his suicide note. They are alarming proof of the indifference of officials to the plight of this young man, indicative of a larger nationwide trend.
