About the Project:

Women are the fastest growing segment of the prison population in America

A documentary that portrays the reality of women's lives in prison

A journey that carries these stories to the women who live them

A project that will connect the experiences of incarcerated women across the nation

Our Goal: To offer female prisoners an education from the mouths of other female prisoners. This project will make incarcerated women their own teachers.

Our Plan: The director and producer of 900 Women will bring the documentary to 25 prisons across the country.

About the Film:

900 WOMEN is a groundbreaking film narrated by Susan Sarandon about the inmates and employees at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women. LCIW is a minimum, medium and maximum-security prison located in the swamplands of Southern Louisiana.

75% of these incarcerated women are mothers.
One fourth of them are serving sentences of 15 years or more.
Children of convicts are 8 times more likely to end up incarcerated themselves.

Behind these statistics are the stories of six women-- six women brave enough to share their hardships, their hopes and their fears with us. While the stories are unique, the experiences of dying in prison, motherhood behind bars, and the difficulties of transitioning to freedom, are heart wrenchingly similar among America's female convicts.
