At the time of filming, Keana Herbert is a 23 year-old mother of three incarcerated for the possession of heroin. We first meet Keana, serving her third year of a five-year sentence, in maximum security. Keana tells her tale of downfall and regret. Simultaneously, we meet her mother, Linda, who acts as both mother and grandmother to Keana's children. Through Linda's accounts, we hear a parent's view on the hardships of raising children in a time when temptation and danger loom in the poverty-stricken neighborhoods of New Orleans. Ten months clean, we witness Keanašs release from prison and her struggle to stay out.

Estranged from her mother (who also served time), Heather's grandparents raised her in an affluent community in the suburbs of New Orleans. Heather's anger and frustration, which often get her into trouble, may prevent her from receiving an early release date. Heather and her mother, Mary Badgeron, are reunited at the time of her parole hearing. Click on picture to hear Heather Zerangue.
